Write an essay (150 - 300 words) about this topic:
The impact that growing demand for more flights has had on the environment is a major concern for many countries. Some people believe that one way to limit the number of people traveling by air is to increase taxes on flights. To what extent do you think this could solve the problem?
Essay 1:
The increasing demand for traveling by plane is an irrevocable result of the incessant development of world trade and openness. However, it somehow puts pressure on countries about the environment, giving rise to ideas of increasing taxes on flights. In my opinion, this solution is not very efficient.
It is clear that rising flight ticket fees will affect decisions of more financially challenged passengers. But other alternatives such as buses, cars, taxies, vans just dominate in short distances within one or two countries with easy-to-go routes. Some journeys across different geographical types like mountains, rivers, seas or sand are very challenging if we do not travel by plane. Besides, traveling across many countries requires a cornucopia of procedures like requesting a passport, visa, customs post,... Tiredness, long time traveling and inconvenience undermine the cheaper cost of these means of transportation.
Secondly, the numbers of long-distance flights outnumbers that of short ones. Reducing a diminutive number of these flights do not make significant changes in the improvement of the environment. Also, statistically, the efficiency of a flight for 800 passengers is higher, in comparison with that of 20 buses, each of which contains 40 people. The impact on the environment is equivalent, whereas the time, safety level and amenities of airplanes are much better.
Conceiving little change taxes can make for bettering the environment, I believe raising taxes on flights is not a preeminent idea. Instead, it is more practical to use more saving-energy planes or find out other sustainable energy to operate the plane.
Essay 2
Environmental pollution is a global problem that every nation must face. Some people concern that the airline industry is a potential contributor to air pollution. They believe the way to limit the number of people travelling by air is to increase taxes on flights. From my point of view, this cannot solve the problem and there are other ways we can consider.
To begin with, it is undeniable that airplane plays an important role in society. Since its birth, it has changed the world on every level. Every location on Earth can be accessible through air travelling. Millions of planes are taken off and landed every day, they crisscross around the globe to transport people and goods to their destinations. However, this aviation industry generates a significant amount of planet-warming gases into the environment.
Despite its harmfulness for the environment, increasing taxes on flights is not an optimal way to figure out the problem. Firstly, a factor must be noted that is the type of people using airplane as a transportation. Supposedly, they can fly regularly that provoke they have much money and they can still afford even if flight ticket price is increased. Otherwise, the middle and low-class people who occasionally use aircraft for important situations will be the worst hit due to increasing taxes. Secondly, there is a fact that the more distance, the more efficient flying becomes. As a result, it is better to encourage people using other transportations such as train or bus for short trips. Moreover, developing alternative biofuels to use in the airplane industry is also a good way of making flights greener.
To sum up, increasing flight ticket prices to protect the environment is unreasonable and inefficient. Airplane is an indispensable part of the progress of human civilization.
